This is an old revision of the document!

Toronto Library eBooks using Adobe Digital Editions

These instructions are actually for Mint 17 Xfce – but hopefully they are written in a generic enough manner to work with any Ubuntu 14.04LTS based Linux Distribution.

Document Context

This Document contains my summary notes for how to use Wine to install the Windows version of Adobe Digital Editions – to be able to borrow & read eBooks from the Toronto Public Library.

Adobe Digital Editions is used to access only Printed type eBooks. For Audio eBooks, the Windows OverDrive application (which is different from the Windows 8 OverDrive application) would need to be installed – again using Wine to do that on Linux PCs.

Since other Public Library Systems use Adobe Digital Editions to permit borrowing eBooks on-line, hopefully this document will be of use to a far greater audience, than just Toronto Ontario.

Needed Account Information

  • To borrow eBooks from the Toronto Public Library, you need to have a valid/active Toronto Library card– and you need to know your 4 digit PIN#. If you don't have either of those, then please contact the Toronto Public Library.
  • To use Adobe Digital Editions to read a DRM (Digital Rights Management) eBook will require having and using an account with adobe.com (your Adobe ID).To sign up for one use the following link:
    www.adobe.com/ca/account/sign-in.adobedotcom.html
Please Note: Adobe Digital Editions will use your Adobe ID (your Adobe Account) to Authorize the computer. So only one (1) Adobe ID should be used with each User Login on a Linux PC.

Install Needed Wine Packages

If a Linux PC is using Nvidia video – and that is using the nvidia 331 video driver – then just installing wine will uninstall your video driver. To install Wine and leave the Nvidia driver installed, use the following alternate instructions:
sudo apt-get install nvidia-cuda-toolkit
sudo apt-get install ocl-icd-opencl-dev
sudo apt-get install wine

Source: nvidia-libopencl1-331 has to be removed before installing WINE

  • Using the Mint Software Manager or the Ubuntu Software Centre do the following:
    • Install wine ← (see the above note)
    • Install winetricks
    • Install wine-mono0.0.8 ← Search for “mono”

Download ADE 1.7.2

  • Adobe Digital Editions 1.7.2 is an older version, but that is still the version that works best with Linux PCs. (Newer versions can be very difficult to get installed and working correctly using Wine.)

Install ADE 1.7.2 using Wine

Install Adobe Digital Editions

  • in the user Downloads folder, right click on digitaleditions_172.exe and select “Open With Wine Windows Program Loader”.
    • Note: On right-click, if you cannot find this menu-item, then the selection could possibly be found in a (right-click) sub-menu.
  • Adobe Digital Editions Setup windows:
    • For the “Select components to install:” window, just press the “Next” button
    • For the “Destination Folder” window, just press the “Install” button
    • Once the Setup shows as Completed, just press the “Close” button
  • Adobe Digital Editions Install window:
    • To use this program, you must accept the “Legal Agreement” … so select the “I Agree” button to do that
  • Adobe Digital Editions Setup Assistant windows:
    • The 1st window just states this is the Setup Assistant … so select the “Continue” button
    • The 2nd window is used to Authorize the computer using your Adobe ID
      • ensure “Authorize Computer (Recommended)” is SELECTED
      • enter your Adobe ID e-mail address
      • enter your Adobe ID password
      • select the “Activate” button
    • The 3rd screen provides a link to the Adobe Digital Editions Library … so just select the “Finished” button

Configure Wine so eBooks are Correctly Accessed

On my own PC, I created an eBooks folder in my home directory. So please replace [ebooks] in the below with the folder where you will be storing your ADE ebook (.acsm) files.
  • “The Adobe Digital Editions is running but it does not see the e-book reader. (When trying to open a .acsm file) For this we need to start the program “Wine Configuration”
    • In the “Wine Configuration” window » select the “Drives” tab
    • Select the “Show Advanced” button
    • Select the “Add” button
      • For Drive Letter: select E (for ebook drive) » then select the “OK” button
      • For Path: select /home/[ebooks] » the “Browse” button can be used to help do this
      • For Type: select Floppy disk
      • Select the “OK” button

Borrow & Read Toronto Public Library eBooks

  • To access the Toronto Library eBooks, go to:
    http://toronto.lib.overdrive.com/
    • On the Top Right of that page, select the “Sign In” link
      • Enter your Library Card number (from the back of the card)
      • Enter your 4-digit PIN # (you need to know this)
      • Select the “Sign In” button
  • No proceed to Find & Borrow an ebook.
  • Move the Downloaded .acsm file from Downloads to the folder you configured as Drive E: (in Wine)
  • Double-click on the .acsm file, to add that eBook to your Adobe Digital Editions ebook reader
The .acsm file just permits downloading the actual ebook by Adobe Digital Editions. So your PC must be connected to the Internet while loading any new ebook into Adobe Digital Editions.

Then Adobe Digital Editions can “just be opened”, to access that already loaded ebook from within your ADE Library.
